Fungal Hyphal Dynamics in a Western Oregon Douglas-fir Stand

چکیده

Total length and biomass of fungal mycelium in the soil of a young stand of second-growth Douglas-fir in the central Oregon Coast Range were estimated over 27 months with the agar-film technique. Mycelial mass was at maximum in fall and spring and significantly lower in summer. Melanized hyphae dominated other colors, averaging 66% of monthly litter and 73.7% of soil hyphal weight. The mycorrhizal fungus Cenococcum geophilum Fr. had significantly larger average diameter than other hyphae and contributed from 1.2 to 64.8% of the monthly hyphal volume. Multiple regression analyses with temperature, moisture, and litterfall produced no adequate predictive equations for monthly fungal biomass. Large biomass fluctuations over short periods necessitate frequent sampling and long-term study to fully assess the importance of fungal hyphae in ecosystems.

Tree-ring stable isotopes record the impact of a foliar fungal pathogen on CO2 assimilation and growth in Douglas-fir

Swiss needle cast (SNC) is a fungal disease of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) that has recently become prevalent in coastal areas of the Pacific Northwest. We used growth measurements and stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen in tree-rings of Douglas-fir and a non-susceptible reference species (western hemlock, Tsuga heterophylla) to evaluate their use as proxies for variation in past SNC i...

Estimating Structural Attributes of Douglas-Fir/ Western Hemlock Forest Stands from Landsat and SPOT Imagery

T o help determine the utility of satellite data for analysis and inventory of Douglas-fir~western hemlock forests west of the Cascade Mountains crest in Oregon and Washington, USA, we evaluate relationships between spectral and texture variables derived from SPOT HR V 10 m panchromatic and LANDSAT TM 30 m multispectral data and 16 forest stand structural attributes. Texture of the HRV data was...

Assessment of Swiss Needle Cast Disease: Temporal and Spatial Investigations of Fungal Colonization and Symptom Severity

Increasing severity of Swiss needle cast (SNC), a foliar disease of Douglas-fir caused by the fungus Phaeocryptopus gaeumannii, has become a matter of concern in forest plantations throughout coastal Oregon and Washington. This study monitored SNC disease in three Oregon Douglas-fir plantations bi-annually in 1998–1999, and compared differences in fungal colonization and symptom development in ...

Source identification of western Oregon Douglas-fir wood cores using mass spectrometry and random forest classification1

PREMISE OF THE STUDY We investigated whether wood metabolite profiles from direct analysis in real time (time-of-flight) mass spectrometry (DART-TOFMS) could be used to determine the geographic origin of Douglas-fir wood cores originating from two regions in western Oregon, USA. METHODS Three annual ring mass spectra were obtained from 188 adult Douglas-fir trees, and these were analyzed usin...
